Rietvallei, who produces Wild Rush, is one of the oldest wine estates in the Robertson region of South Africa’s Western Cape. It’s situated in the Klaasvoogds area, which is a picturesque valley named after the intrepid pioneer Klaas Voogds, who was trampled to death in the Landeberg mountains by an elephant in 1717. Rietvallei is a fifth-generation family company, started by Alwyn Burger who acquired the farm in 1864. He produced Rietvallei Red Muscadel, which continued to be the only wine made for more than 100 years. Even today wine is still produced from a red Muscadel bush vine planted in 1908. Today Johnny Burger is the owner and winemaker. His first introduction to winemaking was when an old cellar assistant of his grandfather taught him Muscadel-making from a recipe nailed behind the cellar door. A year later, in 1971, he went to Stellenbosch to study viticulture and winemaking. Johnny still follows the old recipe, although now using modern cellar techniques. White wine making was introduced in 1982 when a new wine cellar with cold maturation capabilities was built. Apart from the Muscadel, Rietvallei grapes include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon. They are grown mostly on southeast-facing slopes in rich limey soil.

The Robertson region, less than 2 hours drive north east of Cape Town, is a region under transformation. The commercial success of the region's leading winemakers, is encouraging many of the bulk grape growers to consider improving the quality of the grapes and making their own wine. Given the extensive re-planting in the late 1990's and early 2000's the regions wine styles will change dramatically
Shiraz and Zinfandel both feature here due to the ripe fruit flavours overlaid with spice. For Shiraz you’ll notice white or black pepper on the nose where Zinfandel will remind you of a spicy fruitcake, think cherries & cinnamon. These wines smell good, look good and taste good.
